چکیده

The cyclic injection of oxygenated water in an aquifer may induce in situ iron removal from groundwater. During injection of aerated water, sorbed ferrous iron is displaced by cations, oxidized in the pore space, and precipitated as ferric iron oxyhydroxide. During pumping, ferrous iron is sorbed from groundwater on the exchange and sorption sites, and the breakthrough of dissolved iron is retarded. Other trace elements such as arsenic may be eliminated jointly with iron by sorption or co-precipitation. The volume of iron-free groundwater that can be pumped per volume of injected, aerated water defines the efficiency of the process. The efficiency is determined by the ratio of the retardations of oxygen during injection and of iron during pumping. This chapter shows how these retardations can be calculated for given water qualities and aquifer compositions. The first seven cycles of an in situ iron removal project in The Netherlands were simulated with the hydrogeochemical transport model PHREEQC (version 2). The concentration changes of CH4, NH4 , Mn, Fe, PO4 3and As are discussed in detail. Arsenic shows concentration jumps in pumped groundwater which are related to oxidation/reduction and sorption/desorption reactions resulting from the water quality variations.

Human Health Risk Assessment of Nitrate and Trace Metals Via Groundwater in Central Bangladesh

Groundwater plays a pivotal role as the largest potable water sources in Bangladesh. As agriculture is widely practiced in Bangladesh, potential nitrate (NO3¯) pollution may occur. Besides, excess amount of arsenic (As) has already been found in groundwater in many parts of Bangladesh including the present study area. Thus, this study was conducted to assess the NO3¯ status along with some trac...

Impact of mining on groundwater quality in SW Ashanti, Ghana: a preliminary study

The focus of this research work is on the determination of the impact of mining on the groundwater quality in the historical mining region of SW Ashanti region in Ghana. This work describes the characteristics of the groundwater chemistry and pollution of the aquifer in the gold-ore bearing formation, which is highly weathered and fractured. The fractures control the permeability and depth of t...

Geochemical modeling and multivariate statistical evaluation of trace elements in arsenic contaminated groundwater systems of Viterbo Area, (Central Italy)

Contamination of groundwater by naturally occurring arsenic has recently become a disturbing environmental problem in Viterbo area, Central Italy. Arsenic concentrations in most of the public supply networks exceed the maximum allowable limit of 10 μg/l (WHO) for drinking water. The primary purpose of this paper is to obtain a better understanding of the factors contributing to the high levels ...

Plasma level of trace elements in patients with oral lichen planus

Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a common inflammatory disease of unknown origins. Recent studies have considered nutritional factors concerning the pathogenesis of many autoimmune disorders. The objective of the present study was to investigate the plasma levels of magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and iron (Fe) in this disorder. Methods: Included in this observation...
